This activity is now closed but information below relating to hepatitis C testing and treatment are still relevant.
On 28 June 2022, a Viral Hepatitis Nurse from SA Health visited Port Pirie to provide rapid hepatitis C testing. This special drop-in clinic was open from 10am to 4pm at the Port Pirie GP Plus Health Care Centre, 50 Gertrude St. Bookings are recommended but not required. Results were available in an hour and delivered via a phone call where preferred.
New Rapid Tests
New hepatitis C rapid testing delivers reliable results in 60 minutes. These new tests are not yet widely available but are being provided through clinics at selected locations around Australia. The new technology uses a fingerstick to draw a tiny amount of blood which is then processed in a GeneXpert machine to produce accurate results on the spot.
People who are diagnosed positive can be referred on the same day for treatment. Treatment can be provided by GPs.
Cure
New hepatitis C treatment has close to 100% cure rate with little side effects. Treatment consists of a course of tablets taken in 8 or 12 weeks depending on the prescription. These Direct Acting Antiviral (DAA) treatments are subsidised and available to all adults with a Medicare Card.
