This year, the aim for World Hepatitis Day in Australia was to mobilise efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis by the WHO’s 2030 target. The month around World Hepatitis Day was busy with activities. In South Australia, Hepatitis SA, in partnership with Relationships Australia, ran two free liver fibroscan clinics at suburban shopping centres.
In addition, there are three free online information sessions – “Awareness starts with the ABCs” – open to anyone interested to learn about viral hepatitis, how to stay safe and how to support those living with chronic hepatitis B and C.

On 28 July, the Adelaide Oval, Footbridge and SA Parliament House was lit green, as was the Elemental sculpture in Victor Harbor and Hepatitis SA’s premises in Hackney. We also leaned into the glowing green campaign by ‘going green’ in other ways. Several groups, including nurses, community members and drug and alcohol service providers took up our invitation of decorating green T-shirts to wear in the week around 28 July. The Flinders Medical Centre hepatology nurses were a stand out with their coordinated T-shirts and messages.

Kicking off was the Northern Migrant Resource Centre in Elizabeth which had a fun-filled painting session (See results in the header image) and participants at an Information and Quiz session at the Overseas Chinese Association received T-shirts as prizes. The T-shirt painting also capped off an education session at Point Pearce Aboriginal Health the following week.

The Chinese Association of SA rounded off World Hepatitis Day activities in SA with a T-shirt decoration workshop run by a professional artist, and participants coming from their membership as well as other community organisations including their community language school, the Australia China Youth Association and the Adelaide Malay Association. Everyone was provided with information on the importance of hepatitis awareness and testing. For children from the language school, information was given to their parents.

During the week of 28 July, the SAhrps program held soup days at their NSP sites in Noarlunga, Uniting Care in the City and Port Adelaide. They created a relaxed setting to start conversations about hepatitis testing and treatment. Treats provided included sour dough bread ‘O’liver toasties’.

And of course, we have to thank our furry friends for putting up with us…
