South Australia’s Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Chris Picton, has described the Community News online platform as an example of Hepatitis SA’s commitment to ensuring that South Australians have access to reliable, up-to-date information on viral hepatitis.
Speaking in a video message released on World Hepatitis Day to support the launch of the HepSA Community News site, Minister Picton noted that Hepatitis SA had been “a leading provider of viral hepatitis prevention, education and support services for the South Australian community since 1994”.
This news website had its first incarnation as a photocopied newsletter, the Hep C Community News, in 1997. Over the following 26 years (including increasingly sophisticated 100 print issues) it has grown to be both a regular in-depth magazine and an ever-increasing online archive of hepatitis news and information.
It is now available as an online portal for information about viral hepatitis in South Australia and around the world, paired with the ongoing printed quarterly magazine. Readers can subscribe to receive notifications of new we publish new stories online.
The Minister said, “This year’s theme for World Hepatitis Day is ‘It’s time for action!’. We’re at a crucial stage of our efforts to eliminate these infections, including significant progress towards eliminating Hepatitis C in South Australia – a public health achievement of international and historical significance.
“We must ensure that we maintain this momentum and that no community is left behind as we progress towards this ambitious goal.”
Acknowledging the work done by Hepatitis SA in viral hepatitis prevention, education and support services, he said “We recognise the importance of educating the community on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these infections.”
The new HepSA Community News is a renewal of our commitment to educating and supporting South Australians, especially those living with viral hepatitis.
“The launch of this new online platform is an example of Hepatitis SA’s commitment to ensuring that South Australians have access to reliable, up-to-date information on viral hepatitis,” Minister Picton said.
“The South Australian Government is proud to partner with Hepatitis SA and I want to thank all staff of the organisation for their leadership and tireless efforts. We look forward to partnering with Hepatitis SA over coming years “as we work together towards the elimination of hepatitis B and C.”
