UPDATE #24 23 April 2020

Chemotherapy treatments at home
In an effort to reduce the need for vulnerable people to attend hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, eligible patients undergoing cancer treatment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital can now receive chemotherapy at home.

A partnership with chemo@home has allowed 29 patients to sign up and complete 105 sessions in the first four weeks of the initiative.

Patients should discuss their options and eligibility for chemo@home with their treating clinician.

South Australian school update
Chief Public Health Officer, Professor Nicola Spurrier has sent a message to parents and carers that it is safe to send children back to school, kindy and day care for term 2.

SA Pathology to remain in public ownership
Following the organisation’s vastly improved performance and commitment to quality care, SA Pathology will remain in public ownership.

SA Pathology has become an organisation of international standing and provided South Australians with world class COVID-19 testing that has reduced the spread of the virus.

Integrated Inpatient Strategy
The SA Health Integrated Inpatient Strategy outlines how public, private and community health sectors would work together to manage a ‘worst case scenario’ outbreak. 

The likelihood of activating this plan based on the state’s current situation is low, but it ensures South Australia is ready to manage any escalation.

SA COVID-19 Mental Health Support
A new online chat function is now available as part of the SA COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line to support the mental health and wellbeing of the South Australian community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

People feeling distressed, isolated or needing additional mental health support, can use the new function to chat online with Uniting Communities’ mental health counsellors.

The service is available at SACOVIDMentalHealth.org.au and is available 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. Support by phone or video call is also available by calling 1800 632 753 during these hours.

GPs and other service providers who would like to arrange a follow up call for their clients from this service can call (08) 8202 5117.

Updated Direction on residential aged care facilities
The updated Direction outlines changes to conditions of entry to residential aged care facilities in South Australia. This includes changes to end of life support visits and entry by emergency services personnel.

UPDATE #22 - Tue 21 April 2020

Restrictions to ease on elective surgeries
Following the National Cabinet decision today, the South Australian Direction in relation to appropriate surgery will be revised and elective surgery will recommence.

Emergency elective cases will be prioritised in line with the National Cabinet guidelines and available personal protective equipment.

Some services will be reinstated next week, in particular BreastScreen SA and urgent dental services. It is expected IVF services will also recommence.

Visitors to residential aged care facilities
Measures in the Direction to limit entry into residential aged care facilities were put into effect as a precaution to ensure vulnerable South Australians are protected.

These measures have been implemented to different degrees and it appears some facilities have stopped all visits by relatives.

Measures should be put in place to ensure residents can receive visitors safely. This includes conducting visits in a resident’s room, outdoors or in a designated area, rather than communal areas, and encouraging social distancing of 1.5m to be adhered to wherever possible.

UPDATE #21 - Mon 20 April 2020

Testing blitz update
SA Pathology has undertaken and processed a record number of COVID-19 tests since the blitz began on Thursday 16 April.

Yesterday 968 tests were undertaken, which is a record for testing on a Sunday in South Australia.

There have been no new cases of COVID-19 reported in South Australia for three days.

Any South Australian who has a fever or respiratory systems consistent with COVID-19, no matter how mild, is encouraged to attend a COVID-19 clinic or their GP for assessment and testing.

Fast track delivery of COVID-19 results
SA Pathology has launched a new COVID-19 Digital Health Service to streamline the delivery of negative COVID-19 test results, enabling patients to access results from a secure online platform.

Patients register their details through SMS and receive a text messagealert when anegative test result is available online.

All results will be manually reviewed before they are entered into the portal to ensure accuracy. Patients who return a positive result will still be contacted personally to inform them.

It will initially be available at all metropolitan testing clinics and 8 regional clinics, with plans to roll it out across the state in the coming weeks.

UPDATE #20 - Fri 17 April 2020

Rapid testing soon available
COVID-19 diagnosis will soon be available in less than 60 minutes with rapid testing capability to be rolled out in the coming weeks.

This will enable clinicians in all metro and ten regional hospitals to make quick decisions around the treatment and care of patients deemed clinically urgent.

Waste water testing
Waste water sampling will help the public health team identify the extent of COVID-19 within the community.

Monitoring waste water will identify the presence of virus genetic material (viral RNA) to build a better understanding of communities where the virus has spread.

UPDATE #19 - Thu 16 April 2020

Recovered cases in South Australia
In South Australia to date, 308 people have recovered from COVID-19. This represents 70 per cent of cases in the state.

Updates to essential traveller criteria
The Direction on cross border travel has been updated to include new information about essential travellers. It includes changes for Defence and military personnel, health services and FIFO workers, as well as people travelling to South Australia to visit a critically or terminally ill relative, or to attend the funeral of an immediate family member.

National update
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced current baseline restrictions will remain in place for at least another four weeks.

Three benchmarks need to be in place before restrictions can be eased. These are a broader and more extensive testing regime, greater contact tracing capabilities using technology and a local response capability to contain localised outbreaks should they occur.

UPDATE #18 - Wed 15 April 2020

Testing blitz
All South Australians with cold or flu symptoms will be able to access COVID-19 testing as part of a two-week testing blitz from 16 April to 30 April 2020.

Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose or shortness of breath, can be tested for COVID-19 as part of the blitz.

Until now, testing has focussed on people most at-risk of contracting the disease, including those who have travelled or are close contacts of confirmed cases.

Low case numbers in recent days mean there is opportunity and capacity to test a broader section of the community.

Testing data will be reviewed to determine whether the strategy needs to be modified and testing criteria adjusted. For more information on how and where to get tested, visit the SA Health website.

UPDATE #17 - Tue 14 April 2020

PPE stock
South Australia has secured more than 1.7 million pieces of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), including surgical masks and N95 masks, providing much needed protection for our staff. Stock should be used appropriately to ensure adequate levels of supplies are maintained.

Free car parking for hospital staff
Free parking and public transport will be provided to South Australian hospital workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes doctors, nurses, administration, cleaners and other support staff.

Further details about accessing these measures will be provided once administrative arrangements are finalised.

Qantas staff at Adelaide Airport
There are a number of Qantas staff-only areas within the Adelaide Airport where confirmed COVID-19 cases have been.Affected staff will be contacted by SA Health Communicable Disease Control Branch in the next few days with more information and instructions.

SA Health are recommending testing of Qantas staff who have been in the affected areas even if they have only very mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.

These staff will be required to be in quarantine for at least 14 days from their last exposure to the site.

At this stage, no public areas have been identified as being affected, but anyone who has been to any area of Adelaide Airport and develops symptoms of COVID-19 must immediately self-isolate and seek testing.

Stop the flu
SA Health has launched the ‘Stop The Flu’ public awareness campaign, which encourages the uptake of the vaccine, especially for those groups more vulnerable to complications from severe flu.

Wakefield Hospital reactivation
The Wakefield Hospital is now fully-equipped as a dedicated COVID-19 response facility. The reactivation has a new $1.9 million CT-scanner, a bulk medical oxygen tank and brings online another 130 beds, if needed.

This will complement other dedicated facilities at ECH College Grove and the Repat, creating 278 additional beds throughout the health system.

ICU Nurse tests positive
An intensive care nurse working with COVID-19 patients at the Royal Adelaide Hospital has tested positive to COVID-19.

To date, 23 close contacts, mainly ICU staff,have been advised to self-isolate and the Communicable Disease Control Branch investigation is ongoing.

There have been 36 cases of COVID-19 in healthcare workers but they have been acquired through overseas or interstate travel or close contact. This is the first hospital acquired case.

UPDATE #16 - Thu 9 April 2020

Local manufacturing of hand sanitiser
Hundreds of thousands of litres of hand sanitiser for hospitals, schools and other government services has been secured by the State Government, through a $2 million partnership with local company, Chesser Chemicals.

This will help safeguard supplies in South Australia and protect those working on the frontline.

Easter message
SA Health would like to thank all South Australians for following health advice and practising good hygiene and social distancing over recent weeks. This has seen the numbers of new cases decrease in our community.

However, SA Health is also urging South Australians to stay home this Easter and school holidays,to continue to protect vulnerable regional communities.

UPDATE #15 - Wed 8 April 2020

Second death in SA from COVID-19
Sadly, SA Health can confirm a 62-year-old woman from metropolitan Adelaide passed away this morning from COVID-19 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The woman acquired COVID-19 from the Ruby Princess cruise ship. Her passing is the second death in South Australia from COVID-19.

2020 Flu Vaccine now available
South Australians eligible for a free influenza vaccine through the National Immunisation Program are being encouraged to contact their immunisation provider to book in to get immunised against the flu.

233,000 doses of the vaccine have been distributed to immunisation providers in the first two weeks of the rollout. All SA Health staff are eligible for a free flu vaccination again this year.

  • There have been 5 new cases of COVID-19 today bringing the total to 420 confirmed cases in South Australia.
  • There havebeen 4 additional cases linked to the Adelaide Airport cluster, taking the total to 33 cases.

UPDATE #14 - Tue 7 April 2020

First death in SA from COVID-19
Sadly, SA Health can confirm a 75-year-old man from metropolitan Adelaide passed away overnight from COVID-19 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The man had recently travelled interstate. Despite the best efforts of the medical professionals and staff and the love and support of his family, he passed away.

The family have publicly implored all South Australians to abide by and comply with the advice and directions given by the government and police.

Children’s book -- Hi. This is coronavirus.
SA Health has produced a new children’s COVID-19 book to help explain to South Australian children about coronavirus and the changes they are having to endure as a result of the current situation.

People who have recovered from COVID-19
SA Health is continuing to collate data from General Practitioners across the state, however, so far 89 people in South Australia have recovered from COVID-19.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 4 new cases of COVID-19 today bringing the total to 415 confirmed cases in South Australia.
  • Cases linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship has increased by 1, to 86 cases. There has also been 1additional case linked to the Adelaide Airport cluster, taking the total to 29 cases.
  • To date, 89 people have been confirmed cleared of COVID-19.

UPDATE #13 - Mon 6 April 2020

Women’s and Children’s Hospital boost
The Women’s and Children’s Hospital has opened more high dependency beds and is training around 80 nurses to work at an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) level.

An additional three High Dependency Unit beds had already been established with planning underway for an additional 10 ICU beds for South Australian women and children.

Extra frontline responders
An additional 97 paramedics will be recruited into SA Ambulance Service to support the frontline response to COVID-19.

SA Ambulance Service is fast-tracking:

  • An intake of 36 paramedic interns,
  • 20 patient transport officers, who will complement a recent intake of 23 graduates
  • 18 interns have recently begun their on the road supervision
  • An additional 11 Triple Zero (000) call takers were recently recruited.

Historic alliance for private and public hospitals
In a first for South Australia, private hospitals will be used as part of the State’s response plan to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The agreement between the State and Commonwealth will provide the local health system with up to 1,700 beds and significant ICU capacity.

  • There have been 2 new cases of COVID-19 today bringing the total to 411 confirmed cases in South Australia.
  • To date, 53 people have been confirmed cleared of COVID-19, however we expect this number to increase as our data is updated.

UPDATE #12 - Fri 3 April 2020

Building capacity at Wakefield Hospital and Repat Health Precinct
A new $1.9 million CT-scanner and a VIE 7000 oxygen tank will arrive at the former Wakefield Hospital site today.

Significant works are also underway at the Repat where a crane is being used to install an important chiller to help service the facility’s soon-to-be established 90 beds for coronavirus patients.

Two dedicated COVID-19 facilities at ECH College Grove and Wakefield Hospital are expected to be operational this month and will provide an additional 188 beds.

Stay at home this Easter and school holidays
The Chief Public Health Officer, Associate Professor Nicola Spurrier, along with mayors from Councils across South Australia are asking people to stay at home this Easter and school holidays, avoiding non-essential travel and reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19.

National update –places of worship
The Prime Minister has announced places of worship will be considered workplaces over Easter and will be able to live stream or broadcast religious services.

Services will still have to adhere to social distancing restrictions.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 11 new cases of COVID-19 today bringing the total to 396confirmed cases in South Australia since 1 February 2020.
  • To date, 46 people have been confirmed cleared of coronavirus, however we expect this number to increase as our data is updated.
  • We are continuing to investigate a cluster of 19 cases linked to baggage handlers at Adelaide Airport. 116 cases have been linked to cruise ships.

UPDATE #11 - Thu 2 April 2020

Flinders Medical Centre expansion
The expansion of the Flinders Medical Centre Emergency Department, as part of the $45.7 million Southern Health Expansion Plan, will commence today.

The expansion is being brought forward by four months to provide extra capacity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heat maps
Heat maps that identify confirmed COVID-19 cases since 1 February across metropolitan and regional South Australia are now available.

These maps show residences of confirmed and recovered cases, and will be updated on a daily basis to depict additional cases across the state.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 18 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total to 385 confirmed cases in South Australia since 1 February 2020.
  • To date, 44 people have been confirmed cleared of coronavirus, however we expect this number to increase as our data is updated.
  • We are continuing to investigate a cluster of 17 cases linked to baggage handlers at Adelaide Airport.
  • Cases linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship have increased by 3, to 81 people.

UPDATE #10 - Wed 1 April 2020

Elective surgery update
All non-emergency and non-urgent elective surgeries, treatments and procedures will be cancelled from 11.59 pm Wednesday 1 April 2020.

The only surgical treatment that may be performed is emergency surgery and procedures that are required to prevent the loss of life, loss of limb or permanent disability.

Tanunda COVID-19 drive-through testing facility
A new COVID-19 drive-through testing facility opened today at Tanunda Memorial Hospital to assist with testing in the Barossa region, in addition to the testing clinic also located at Tanunda Hospital.

South Australia leads the country in testing
More than 27,500 coronavirus tests have been conducted across 54 testing sites, with 48 located in regional South Australia.

SA has performed 15,000 tests per million of population, well ahead of Australia’s average of 10,000 and ahead of overseas countries.

Additional contact tracing capacity in SA Health
The Communicable Disease Control Branch’s contact tracing team will be boosted by up to 300 additional staff, joining a team of around 140 experts, plus medical students who are assisting.

The additional staff will further improve our ability to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Emergency supply of medications
Pharmacists will now be able to dispense an emergency supply of essential medicines without the need for a prescription during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 30 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 today – bringing the total to 367 in South Australia since 1 February 2020.
  • Investigation is ongoing into the cluster of cases identified yesterday at Adelaide Airport. There have been 11 cases identified in baggage handlers and another 2 secondary cases in family, taking the cluster to a total of 13 cases.
  • As a result, the testing criteria has been expanded. Anyone who is sick with symptoms of coronavirus and have been at the airport, including in the terminal or car park, in the last 14 days should present for testing.

UPDATE #9 - Tue 31 March 2020

SA Health has launched a new mental health support line to help support the health and wellbeing of South Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trained Lifeline counsellors will receive calls and also provide a call-back support service for people in distress, or who are in need of additional support caused by social isolation and long periods of quarantine.

The support line will be staffed seven days week, from 8am to 8pm and can be reached at 1800 632 753.

Mask manufacturing in South Australia
SA Health has partnered with Adelaide-based company Detmold to source 10 machines to manufacture 45 million N95/P2 medical respirator and Level 3 barrier protection surgical masks for use in South Australia. 

This will ensure that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is reserved for frontline staff treating patients who are suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 337 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Australia since 1 February 2020.
  • We have identified a cluster of 6 cases in baggage handlers at Adelaide Airport. Approximately 100 further staff from the airport are quarantining. We are working with Qantas to continue to investigate the issue.

UPDATE #8 - Mon 30 March 2020

South Australia’s Chief Public Health Officer issued a public health alert on Sunday 29 March for areas within the Barossa region after 34 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were linked to the area.

Anyone who has visited or lives in Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Williamstown, Angaston and Lyndoch from Saturday 14 March 2020 and develops symptoms should immediately self-isolate and seek testing.

  • SA Health has established a COVID-19 testing clinic at Tanunda War Memorial Hospital for people with symptoms.
  • Schools have closed in the affected towns and non-essential travel in these areas is discouraged.
  • More information is available on the SA Health website.

In other updates:

  • National Cabinet has issued further recommendations on non-essential businesses and gatherings.
  • South Australians over 70 years of age and 60 years of age (with existing health conditions) are strongly encouraged to stay at home as much as possible.
  • The Premier has thanked South Australians for their actions and commitment in flattening the curve and adhering to recommendations.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • There have been 305 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Australia since 1 February 2020.
  • While the majority of cases can be traced to overseas travel, interstate travel or confirmed contact of a known case, SA Health is investigating a total of three cases of community transmission within South Australia.

UPDATE #7 - Fri 27 March 2020

A quick summary of the South Australian COVID-19 stats:

  • Only 2 of the 257 cases have recorded no interstate or overseas travel and are classed as local transmission.
  • All other confirmed cases have recently returned from overseas, interstate, or are a close contact of a previously confirmed case.
  • 6 South Australians are receiving care at the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s Intensive Critical Care Unit.
  • 53 cases are linked to the Ruby Princess Cruise Ship (77 cases in total linked to cruise ships).

As of 26 March, >6,650 people have been tested at metro COVID clinics and SA Pathology has undertaken >23,500 tests.

To help flatten the curve, remember to practice social distancing and help stop the spread by practising good hand hygiene and covering coughs and sneezes.

  • From Saturday 28 March, States and Territories will be quarantining all arrivals to Australia for two weeks in hotels and other facilities, with the Australian Defence Force assisting with enforcement compliance checks.

  • The Department for Education announced four pupil free days before Easter (Monday 6 to Thursday 9 April) for all public schools and preschools.
  • Clarifications have been made by the Commonwealth Government to previously announced restrictions around funerals and hairdressing.
  • The deadline for the cancellation of semi-urgent category two and three elective surgeries in private hospitals has been extended until 11.59pm on 1 April 2020. Patients should contact their GP or treating clinician for further information.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • Since 1 February 2020, there have been 235 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Australia.
  • Of these, 60 cases can be directly linked to travel on cruise liners.
  • There are no reports of any additional cases of local transmission.

The health workforce will be boosted with highly skilled nurses and midwives in the health workforce as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

The State Government has begun fast-tracking recruitment of nurses and midwives with a range of skills including intensive care, home care and aged care.

As part of the initiative, SA Health will work with education partners in the rapid upskilling of nurses for support in areas of need, including ICU-level care.

In other updates:

  • Non-urgent elective surgeries in Australia's public and private hospitals will be banned from midnight in a bid to preserve the healthcare system to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • New restrictions have been issued on non-essential businesses and activities.
  • The Prime Minister announced a ban on Australians travelling overseas.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA COVID-19 CASES

  • Since 1 February 2020, there have been 197 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Australia.
  • While the majority of cases can be traced to overseas travel, interstate travel or confirmed contact of a known case, SA Health has identified two cases of local community transmission.
  • There is an ongoing investigation into cluster of cases at Lyndoch Hill Winery and Chateau in the Barossa. Anyone who attended the winery on or after 14 March and are now unwell should self-isolate and seek testing.
