{"id":8331,"date":"2026-09-30T11:37:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T02:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=8331"},"modified":"2026-10-01T22:09:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T12:39:09","slug":"burnet-endbcre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/09\/burnet-endbcre\/","title":{"rendered":"End Hepatitis B Centre for Research Excellence to be established in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burnet_Institute\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burnet_Institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burnet Institute, <\/a>a research and public action organisation based in Victoria, will lead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhmrc.gov.au\/about-us\/news-centre\/66-million-fund-centres-research-excellence\">a new $3 <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnet.edu.au\/news\/burnet-to-lead-3-million-national-centre-to-end-hepatitis-b-deaths\/\">million centre<\/a> bringing together leading Australian experts to reduce deaths from hepatitis B.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnet.edu.au\/about-us\/our-people-and-structure\/our-people\/jessica-howell\/\">Associate Professor Jessica Howell<\/a>, who is the Burnet Head of Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer, the End Hepatitis B Centre for Research Excellence (END\u2010B CRE) will focus on finding the most effective and cost\u2010effective ways to increase hepatitis B testing, connect people with care and increase treatment uptake across Australia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">END-B CRE will be a Centre for Research Excellence under Australia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Health_and_Medical_Research_Council\">National Health and Medical Research Council<\/a>, the main statutory authority of the Australian Government responsible for medical research. However, vaccination is extremely effective, and is both highly recommended and free for all babies born in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hep B in SA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 11,682 people were living with hepatitis B in South Australia in 2024, or 0.62% of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common countries of birth for those affected are China, Vietnam, Philippines, Italy, and Greece. The most common languages spoken by those affected are Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Greek, and Tagalog\/Filipino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infant immunisation coverage in SA is close to the 95% target level, at 94.2% of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diagnosis, treatment and care uptake were well below target levels in Australia and in SA specfifically in 2024. SA rates for all three were very similar to the national rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hepatitis B diagnostic testing has declined in many priority populations in SA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most people in SA have had hepatitis B care in the past, but many have been lost to follow-up and require re-engagement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is estimated that 203 lives have been saved in SA due to hepatitis B treatment since 2000. Further scale-up would avert additional deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Burnet Institute, a research and public
