{"id":8207,"date":"2026-08-13T13:56:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T04:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=8207"},"modified":"2026-08-13T13:56:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T04:26:26","slug":"australian-story-blood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/08\/australian-story-blood\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Australian Story&#8217; episode a reminder to get tested and treated for Hep C"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepatitisaustralia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hepatitis Australia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hepatitis SA<\/a> are reminding all Australians, particularly anyone who received a blood transfusion or blood product before donor screening began in 1990, that hepatitis C is curable, and that free and confidential testing, support and treatment are available through HepLink (call <strong>1800 437 222<\/strong> or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/heplink.au\">heplink.au<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This important reminder comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/programs\/austory\">ABC\u2019s <em>Australian Story<\/em><\/a> aired an episode earlier this week, revisiting the experiences of people affected by hepatitis C and HIV contracted through blood and blood products in Australia prior to screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#039;I was infected with hep C when I was six&#039; | Australian Story\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qH3uNHPP9d4?list=PLDTPrMoGHssDzqF7spxT_VH3Zd266tSEp\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hepatitis Australia CEO Lucy Clynes said the organisation\u2019s priority was making sure anyone who saw the episode and had questions about their own hepatitis status knew where to turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever people take from [the] program, the single most important message we want them to hear is that hepatitis C is curable and that people can get tested confidentially, for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you received a blood transfusion or blood product before 1990, or you\u2019re simply not sure of your hepatitis status, please don\u2019t wait. A simple test can give you an answer, and if you do have hepatitis C, treatment today is highly effective, straightforward and available to everyone who needs it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe understand this is a deeply personal issue for many people, and that some in our community are still seeking answers and accountability for what happened to them. Our focus is on making sure practical help and support is there for anyone who needs it, right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia introduced screening of the blood supply for hepatitis C in 1990, becoming one of the first countries in the world to do so. Additional testing measures were introduced during the 1980s and 1990s to further reduce the risk of transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Should Consider Testing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may benefit from hepatitis B and hepatitis C testing if they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Received a blood transfusion before routine hep B screening was introduced in 1971.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Received a blood transfusion before 1990, when routine hepatitis C screening of introduced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Received clotting factors or other plasma-derived blood products before 2000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are unsure whether they have ever been tested following a historical transfusion or blood product exposure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Testing Is Important<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C have no symptoms for many years. Testing is the only way to know whether a past exposure resulted in infection.
