Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. Left unmanaged, hepatitis B can lead to serious liver disease such as liver failure and liver cancer, which is one of the fastest rising causes of cancer-related deaths despite being largely preventable. Worryingly, three out of ten Australians with hepatitis B don’t know they have it.

The Hepatitis B virus is carried in the blood and in body fluids. Most people with chronic hepatitis B got it during birth from mothers who had hepatitis B, with people from regions of high prevalence at greater risk.

The report shows very strong evidence that treatment for hepatitis B saves lives. Modelling estimates suggest that 406 lives were saved across Australia in 2024 due to antiviral treatment. The same modelling indicates that a total of 4,474 lives have been saved since the year 2000 following the introduction of antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in Australia.

From the report (p60)

Despite this excellent news, there are some significant negatives in the report. An estimated 153,286 people living with CHB in 2024 had ever been diagnosed, believed to be just over 67% of the true number, and this is well below the National Strategy 2030 diagnosis target of 90%. Over 52,000 more people living with CHB need to be diagnosed in 2030 to reach this target, whereas current diagnosis projections actually estimate Australia will not reach the diagnosis target until after 2050!

An estimated 63,444 (27.9%) people were engaged in clinical care for their CHB in 2024, receiving
either antiviral treatment or the recommended annual hepatitis B viral load test. Again, Australia is not on track to reach the National Strategy 2030 target of 80% in care, with more than 119,000 more people required to be in care in 2030 to reach this target. At the current rate of progress, Australia will also not reach this care target until after 2050.

…there has been a 14.9% increase in estimated deaths attributable to chronic hepatitis B

An estimated 28,805 (12.7%) people were dispensed drugs for the treatment of hepatitis B
through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Australia is not on track to reach the National Strategy 2030 target of 27% on treatment, with 27,012 more people required to be receiving treatment in 2030 to reach this target. At the current rate of progress, Australia will not reach the treatment target until 2043–better than 2050, but hardly good.

Nationally, between 2015 and 2024, there has been a 14.9% increase in estimated deaths due to chronic hepatitis B. Again, Australia is not on track to reach the National Strategy target of a 30% reduction in attributable deaths by 2030 (when compared to 2015), which would require deaths to fall to 263 by 2030, compared to the current projection of 476 deaths in 2030.

Progress to the various targets (p18)

As to how SA is faring against the national backdrop, the results are also mixed.
