Screening is a way of finding signs of cancer in people who do not have any symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to find cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia. But if found early, most cases can be treated successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lung Cancer Screening Saves Lives\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cXd_qSMjcxg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"about-the-national-lung-screening-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the National Lung Screening Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launched on 1 July 2025, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/our-work\/nlcsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Lung Cancer Screening Program<\/a>&nbsp;(NLCSP) is a free initiative from the Australian government. It&#8217;s designed to detect&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org.au\/cancer-information\/types-of-cancer\/lung-cancer\">lung cancer<\/a>&nbsp;in people most at risk \u2013 before symptoms appear. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/lung-cancer-screening-saves-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">program<\/a>&nbsp;uses a low-dose CT scan (low-dose radiation) to look for any lumps, called nodules, in the lungs. Most nodules will not be cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screening is for people without symptoms \u2013 a cough that won\u2019t go away, or coughing up blood, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Detects cancer early \u2013 before symptoms show<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increases the chance of successful treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduces lung cancer deaths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"who-is-eligible-for-screening\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is eligible for screening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lung screening is for those most at risk. You are eligible for lung screening if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are aged between 50-70 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You smoke tobacco cigarettes or have a history of cigarette smoking (having quit within the last 10 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a history of tobacco cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years (for example, a pack a day for 30 years, or 2 packs a day for 15 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don&#8217;t have symptoms of lung cancer (symptoms include an unexplained persistent cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath for no reason)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re unsure, speak to your doctor. They can assess your risk and guide you through the next steps. If you are eligible, you can have a scan every two years. You will need to get a doctor or medical professional to refer you for a scan. Screening can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Detect cancer before symptoms develop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve survival<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give you peace of mind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If found early, over 65 per cent of lung cancers can be successfully treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-expect-during-a-lung-screening\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to expect during a lung screening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The screening uses a free low-dose CT scan. Here\u2019s what to expect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will lie flat on your back on a table with your arms above your head. You will need to hold your breath for a few seconds and stay still.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the scan, the radiographer will take images of your chest. You will not need to have any needles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The scan itself will take about 10 seconds, and you should not feel any pain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can go home straight away and resume normal activities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A radiologist will review the images, and your doctor will receive the results of your scan. You will receive a notification (text message or letter) from the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) that lets you know what you need to do next. This may be to have a low-dose CT scan again in two years, or to discuss your results with your doctor. If something unusual is found, further testing may be recommended\u2013 but not all findings are cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-access-lung-screening\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to access lung screening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your doctor or healthcare provider can help determine your eligibility. A low-dose CT scan can provide assurance of your lung health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It gives you an opportunity to discuss your smoking history and get support if you choose to quit.<a><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I have already symptoms that I think might be lung cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screening is not suitable for anyone with unexplained persistent symptoms, including those below. These people need different tests.
