{"id":7838,"date":"2026-05-13T13:09:56","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T03:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=7838"},"modified":"2026-05-15T15:04:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T05:34:34","slug":"china-bepirovirsen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/05\/china-bepirovirsen\/","title":{"rendered":"Claimed Hep B Cure in Chinese Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Pharmaceutical giant GSK has announced that it has entered into an exclusive collaboration with the Hong Kong-based pharma company Sino Biopharmaceutical to sell in mainland China, a chronic \u200bhepatitis B drug which is still under review in many health jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China is a growing market for pharmaceutical products and with a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11806133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third of the world&#8217;s hepatitis B cases (more than 70 million people are living with hepatitis B in China)<\/a> there will potentially be a huge demand for <strong>bepirovirsen<\/strong>, the product in the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/01\/bepirovirsen2601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community News reported on this potential hepatitis B cure<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsk.com\/en-gb\/media\/press-releases\/gsk-announces-positive-results-from-b-well-1-and-b-well-2-phase-iii-trials-for-bepirovirsen-a-potential-first-in-class-treatment-for-chronic-hepatitis-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GSK claimed was showing positive results<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2025\/11\/understanding-clinical-trials-in-masld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">phase-III trials<\/a>\u00a0as a treatment for chronic hepatitis B. GSK claimed that bepirovirsen demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful functional cure rate for HBV, which would be a dramatic development. Frustratingly, the actual research data itself remains unreleased outside of broad details in media releases and PR articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GSK maintains that the full results of their research will be presented at the end of May at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easlcongress.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) congress<\/a>.
