{"id":7710,"date":"2026-04-29T10:05:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T00:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=7710"},"modified":"2026-04-29T10:06:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T00:36:33","slug":"library-unsafe-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/04\/library-unsafe-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"In Our Library: Is it safe to ask AI for health advice?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>People are increasingly relying on AI sources for health information, but is it safe to do so?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worldwide, 1 in 4 queries to ChatGPT are health related, while almost 1 in 10 Australians reported that they had asked ChatGPT about their health<sup data-fn=\"73cd162a-53bf-44e8-a78c-12798d910a71\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#73cd162a-53bf-44e8-a78c-12798d910a71\" id=\"73cd162a-53bf-44e8-a78c-12798d910a71-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>independent studies consistently show that AI tools give unsafe health advice<\/strong>. One study found that <strong>ChatGPT Health<\/strong> <strong>failed to recommend emergency care when it was needed in over 50% of cases<\/strong>. At the same time, it did suggest emergency care to 64% of people who had a non-urgent problem<sup data-fn=\"c31403d9-8a4a-4a16-abb7-5848dd06fd32\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c31403d9-8a4a-4a16-abb7-5848dd06fd32\" id=\"c31403d9-8a4a-4a16-abb7-5848dd06fd32-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, <strong>Google removed several AI Overviews on health topics after a Guardian investigation found the advice about blood tests results was dangerous and misleading<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, AI tools don&#8217;t merit the level of trust that people are placing in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sydney Health Literacy Lab has developed an education resource for using AI more safely. It suggests only asking AI questions when there is a straightforward factual answer with credible information readily available, preferably while also checking other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They point out that <strong>ChatGPT will:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sound authoritative and confident, even when it is wrong<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make up references or<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Provide real references which do not actually match the information given by the AI<\/strong><sup data-fn=\"ec671d47-b33d-439c-9867-f582c8fee2d6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ec671d47-b33d-439c-9867-f582c8fee2d6\" id=\"ec671d47-b33d-439c-9867-f582c8fee2d6-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Australia there are a number of high quality, credible health resources available online that provide a safer alternative to AI tools<\/strong>. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/\">healthdirect<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Better Health Channel<\/a> (both government funded) as well as the healthdirect phoneline which allows people to speak to a nurse about their concern.
