{"id":7653,"date":"2026-04-02T10:57:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T01:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=7653"},"modified":"2026-04-02T10:57:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T01:27:35","slug":"new-australian-hepatitis-strategies-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2026\/04\/new-australian-hepatitis-strategies-released\/","title":{"rendered":"New Australian Hepatitis Strategies Released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Australia has taken a significant step in its commitment to ending hepatitis B and C as public health challenges, with the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/fourth-national-hepatitis-b-strategy-2025-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fourth National Hepatitis\u202fB Strategy 2025\u20132030<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/sixth-national-hepatitis-c-strategy-2025-2030\">Sixth National Hepatitis\u202fC Strategy 2025\u20132030<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new strategies set the next stage of Australia\u2019s\u00a0world-leading\u00a0national response, strengthening prevention, improving early\u00a0diagnosis\u00a0and ensuring people can access treatment and care.\u00a0Importantly, they also cover the period up to 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2030accord.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when Australia has committed to to eliminating viral hepatitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Health Minister Rebecca White, who launched the strategies, talked about the current state of the hepatitis response in Australia. \u201cToo many people are living with\u00a0viral\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0without knowing it or without the support they need\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0working to change, &#8221; As well as elimination, they outline Australia\u2019s national approach to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce illness and deaths caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improve diagnosis, treatment and long-term care uptake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce stigma and discrimination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensure people can access care regardless of where they live<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop a strong evidence base for action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-the-strategies-matter\">Why the strategies matter<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov.au\/newsroom\/news-and-articles\/new-national-strategies-set-path-eliminate-hepatitis-b-and-c#why-the-strategies-matter\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia has made important progress under the previous national hepatitis strategies. This includes increasing hepatitis B vaccination rates in children and improved access to hepatitis C treatments. However, despite effective prevention, testing and treatment tools, hepatitis B and C remain leading causes of liver disease and liver cancer in Australia. The hepatitis\u202fC strategy focuses on finding people who are undiagnosed or disengaged from care and supporting access to curative treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both strategies highlight that viral hepatitis disproportionately impacts several key populations. They prioritise action and set targets across 6 shared areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>education and prevention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>testing, treatment and management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>equitable access to care and support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a skilled and supported workforce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reducing stigma and discrimination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>strong data, surveillance, research and evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategies build\u00a0on\u00a0existing\u00a0Government\u00a0investment\u00a0so\u00a0Australians can live free from the impact of hepatitis B and C, including $51.7 million over 3 years to continue the national viral hepatitis elimination program, and $23.7 million to support on-the-ground hepatitis B and C initiatives, including for point-of-care testing, treatment and care, and pilot\u00a0hepatitis B programs\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia has taken a
