A high level of immunity is needed to be able to give blood. If you had hepatitis B in childhood you are more likely to still have it \u2013 called chronic (life-long) hepatitis B.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Hepatitis B status<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Donation eligibility<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Reason<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Acute infection (recovered)<\/td><td>Yes, after 12 months (only if you have a high level of immunity)<\/td><td>You must have fully cleared the virus and regained normal liver function and have a high level of immunity. The high level of immunity is needed, because there is a small risk of low levels of virus even after clearing hepatitis B.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Chronic infection<br>(life-long)<\/td><td>No<\/td><td>The virus stays in the body for life and may still be present at low levels<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Uncertain history (had hepatitis B as a child)<\/td><td>Maybe<\/td><td>A doctor must confirm you cleared the infection, and no longer have hep B<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why you need to wait 12 months:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after recovery, very small amounts of hepatitis B can remain in the body. The 12-month gap gives your body extra time to fully clear the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible to donate, Lifeblood will test to see what your levels of immunity are. If your levels of immunity are high (meaning there is little or no hepatitis B left in your blood), you will be able to donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you have chronic (life-long) hepatitis B:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot donate blood in Australia. Chronic hepatitis B means the virus is still present in your blood even if you have no symptoms. To learn more about chronic hepatitis B, read our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hep.org.au\/hep-b\/living-with-hep-b\/\">living with hepatitis B page.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hepatitis C and blood donation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you donate blood if you\u2019ve had hepatitis C \u2013 even if you\u2019re cured?<strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, no. Anyone who has ever tested positive for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hep.org.au\/hep-c\/\">hepatitis C<\/a>&nbsp;cannot donate blood in Australia \u2013 even if you\u2019ve completed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hep.org.au\/hep-c\/hep-c-treatment\/\">treatment<\/a>&nbsp;and are cured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why this rule exists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The screening test used by Lifeblood looks for hepatitis C antibodies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These antibodies stay in your bloodstream for life, even after you clear or are cured of hepatitis C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All antibody-positive donations can\u2019t be used and must be discarded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So even though you no longer have hepatitis C, your blood would still test positive for hepatitis C antibodies \u2013 and the system would automatically flag it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if you cleared the virus naturally? The same rule applies. To be eligible to donate you must wait 3 months after your last sexual contact. This covers the \u2018window period\u2019 (the short period after infection where blood tests might not yet show the virus). After that, you\u2019re clear to donate, as long as you meet all other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeblood.com.au\/donors\/blood-plasma-platelets\/eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eligibility criteria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you\u2019re unsure which type you had<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever been told you had \u201chepatitis\u201d or \u201cjaundice\u201d in the past but don\u2019t know the type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For unknown hepatitis the wait period is 12 months after recovering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mention it on your donor questionnaire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The staff will confidentially review your history. They might do further blood tests to see if you are eligible to give blood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your doctor can confirm it was hepatitis A and you\u2019ve recovered, you may be eligible after 6 months<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure, it\u2019s best to see your doctor and get tested to see if you have, or had hepatitis B or C.
