{"id":6906,"date":"2025-11-05T10:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T01:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=6906"},"modified":"2025-11-28T11:06:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T01:36:05","slug":"pig-to-human-liver-transplant-shows-mixed-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2025\/11\/pig-to-human-liver-transplant-shows-mixed-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Pig-to-Human Liver Transplant Shows Mixed Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Part of a liver from a genetically engineered pig has been transplanted into a living human recipient, who then survived a further six months before dying from repeated upper gastrointestinal hemorrhages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research was reported in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jhep.2025.08.044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journal-of-hepatology.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journal of Hepatology<\/em><\/a>, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/scientific-contributions\/Wenjie-Zhang-2063143637\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Wenjie Zhang<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dovepress.com\/public_profile.php?id=272698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Beicheng Sun<\/a>. It shows that genetically engineered pig livers can support key hepatic (liver-related), metabolic (breaking down food for the body to use) and synthetic (making new chemicals for the body) functions in human beings for extended periods of time. It also shows the difficulties in making this work for the length of a full human lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the world, there are thousands of people who die every year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK580031\/#:~:text=The%20gap%20between%20patients%20on,even%20reach%20the%20waiting%20list.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">while waiting<\/a> for organ transplants, due to the limited supply of viable human organs. In the researchers&#8217; home nation of China, for example, hundreds of thousands of people experience liver failure annually, yet only around 6,000 people received a liver transplant in 2022. He was not eligible for a human liver transplant, nor would he have been helped by a liver resection, where a diseased part of the liver is removed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;donor&#8221; (the word is used uneasily, since the pig could obviously not provide consent) was a miniature pig with edits to 10 of its genes, designed to increase compatibility with the human recipient by removing immune system triggers and improving blood coagulating after surgery. It shows that a genetically modified porcine liver can engraft and deliver key hepatic functions in a human recipient. At the same time, it highlights the biological and ethical challenges that remain before such approaches can be translated into wider clinical use. Xenotransplantation may open completely new paths for patients with acute liver failure, acute-on-chronic liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. A new era of transplant hepatology has started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, even if it is made to work perfectly, xenotransplantation still brings with it a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehastingscenter.org\/xenotransplantation-three-areas-of-concern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ethical and medical issues<\/a>, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcrm.org\/news\/good-science-digest\/shifting-away-animal-human-organ-transplantation-toward-better-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk of animal-human
