{"id":6802,"date":"2025-10-22T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T22:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=6802"},"modified":"2025-12-04T12:21:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T02:51:56","slug":"in-our-library-post-cure-life-after-hepatitis-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2025\/10\/in-our-library-post-cure-life-after-hepatitis-c\/","title":{"rendered":"In Our Library: Life after hepatitis C"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The long-awaited direct-acting antivirals have had significant benefits, with those cured facing much better outcomes than people who have not been treated.&nbsp;However, a number of challenges threaten to undermine the individual and public health gains provided by DAAs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overall mortality is higher for people who have been cured when compared to the general population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stigma remains a barrier to healthcare and social inclusion, either because of misunderstandings about antibody positive status or because of the association of hepatitis C with injecting drug use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining cure is an ongoing challenge for people who live with the same risks that led to their initial infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The articles in this alert highlight the need for continued care after cure and include calls to expand the focus of elimination efforts to include the overall healthcare needs and human rights of people affected by hepatitis C.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our findings bring into focus the importance of establishing robust care and harm reduction pathways after successful HCV treatment.
