The statement pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.vic.gov.au\/immunisation\/vaccine-history-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since 2000<\/a>, the birth-dose hepatitis B vaccine has been recommended, and is provided for free under Australia\u2019s National Immunisation Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, <a href=\"https:\/\/immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au\/contents\/vaccine-preventable-diseases\/hepatitis-b#vaccines-dosage-and-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four hepatitis B vaccinations<\/a> are recommended before six months of age, with the first being preferably within 24 hours of birth when medically stable. Protection against hepatitis B is almost always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hepatitis-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-lasting<\/a>, and the birth-dose is <a href=\"https:\/\/immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au\/contents\/vaccine-preventable-diseases\/hepatitis-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tolerated very well<\/a> by newborn babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBirth-dose vaccination is one of the strongest and most effective tools we have to prevent babies and children from developing chronic hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can have profound lifelong health impacts and increases the risk of potentially fatal liver cancer,\u201d said Lucy Clynes, CEO of Hepatitis Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe risk of developing chronic hepatitis B is <a href=\"https:\/\/sti.guidelines.org.au\/sexually-transmissible-infections\/hepatitis-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 90 per cent<\/a> for babies who are exposed to hepatitis B. Any unnecessary delay to childhood hepatitis B vaccination creates an unacceptable and avoidable risk of chronic hepatitis B.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Childhood hepatitis B vaccination has supported a 60% decline in hepatitis B notifications in Australia in people aged under 20&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the childhood vaccination program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/topics\/immunisation\/immunisation-data\/childhood-immunisation-coverage\/current-coverage-data-tables-for-all-children?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">93% of one-year-olds<\/a> have been immunised against hepatitis B as of June 2025. Childhood hepatitis B vaccination has supported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirby.unsw.edu.au\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Annual_Surveillance_Report_2024_HBV.pdf?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60% decline<\/a> in hepatitis B notifications in Australia in people aged under 20 between 2014 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that childhood vaccinations work,\u201d said Alexis Apostolellis, CEO of ASHM. \u201cAustralia has shown great progress towards the elimination of hepatitis B transmission, particularly in children and adolescents.
