Most of us struggle to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatforhealth.gov.au\/guidelines\/australian-dietary-guidelines-1-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australian Dietary Guidelines<\/a>&nbsp; by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and limiting the amount of convenience foods in our diet. However, with a little thought, planning and effort you can make cooking more convenient and eating the way you want to a lot more achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although cooking is often presented as a pleasurable activity that we all enjoy and naturally know how to do this isn\u2019t the case for many people. At the end of a long day cooking can be a real chore. Surprisingly, recognising this can be the key to eating better more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approaching cooking as a chore like any other &#8211; doing laundry, cleaning the house &#8211; can make it much easier to come to terms with the fact that it\u2019s just something you have to do if you want the rewards of having a healthy diet. It also allows you to look at the tasks that are involved and make choices that make it easier for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some common aspects of cooking that people find a chore and suggested solutions. Put them in a clean plastic container&nbsp;or new plastic bag and put them in the crisper ready to use for the week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy chopped or frozen vegetables. Frozen chopped onions are an excellent time and effort saver. Jars of garlic and ginger are also helpful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use canned (low salt\/unsalted varieties) beans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy chopped meat, chicken etc. <a href=\"http:\/\/sweetpeasandsaffron.com\/2017\/02\/7-chicken-marinade-recipes-freezer-friendly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Divide them into meal sized portions and add marinade.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thekitchn.com\/how-to-make-ahead-and-freeze-cooked-rice-or-any-grain-226716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cook batches of rice, pasta or noodles and freeze meal size portions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--default)\"><strong>Cooking everyday<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frugalandthriving.com.au\/2016\/cook-once-eat-twice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cook extra and freeze for another meal<\/a>. If you combine this with a meal plan (see below) you can make a few cooking sessions go a long way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--default)\"><strong>Cleaning up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cook mainly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyfood.co.nz\/meals-and-occasions\/one-dish-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one dish<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamieoliver.com\/recipes\/category\/course\/one-pan-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one pan<\/a> meals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Line your griller\/baking tray etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash up as you cook so that you only have to wash your plate and cutlery after dinner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--default)\"><strong>Deciding what to cook<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a meal plan. You can purchase them, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thekitchn.com\/the-beginners-guide-to-meal-planning-what-to-know-how-to-succeed-and-what-to-skip-242413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make it yourself <\/a>or get help from a dietician. Cookbooks which have excellent meal plans include the <em>CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet<\/em> and the <em>Low GI Diet<\/em> series of books. These books are available at your local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraries.sa.gov.au\/page.aspx?u=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SA public library<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An alternative to a meal plan is a simple list of meals with the ingredients listed out. The major supermarkets do home delivery and there are many fruit &amp; veggie services available in SA. Your orders are stored making it easier to order the second time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--default)\"><strong>Cooking itself<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep it really simple. 1 grain or carbohydrate, 1 protein and some veggies will do it or use <a href=\"http:\/\/thestonesoup.com\/blog\/recipe-index-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recipes with only a few ingredients<\/a>. Trying to coordinate a complex meal takes time and experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build up a small collection of recipes that you make frequently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make meals that you prepare and walk away from such as baking pan or one pot meals (see above for some recipes ideas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use easier cooking methods such as baking, grilling, steaming and microwaving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have some good quality, low salt ready or frozen meals on hand for when you really can\u2019t be bothered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look up times and instructions as needed to reduce frustration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider taking a cooking class (online&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamieshomecookingskills.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoy-how-to-cook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wea-sa.com.au\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in person<\/a>) to increase your skills.
