People read them, wrote letters to the editor and contributed essays. That\u2019s when our Community News was born \u2013 back in 1997, as a platform for discussion and sharing knowledge \u2013 part of a nascent hepatitis C information and support service. Come February 2024, the Community News publishes its 100th issue. In this retrospective, we take a look at how the publication has evolved over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hepatitis SA veterans, Deborah Warneke-Arnold and Fred Robertson remembered the early, heady days. \u201cWe had a tiny room at DASSA on Fourth Avenue, one project officer, Colin, and a one-day-a-week admin person, Julie,\u201d Deborah recalled. \u201cWe were getting calls from people wanting more information. We thought, we\u2019ve got all this information from the readings we\u2019re doing, we should share it with a newsletter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hep C Community News started with an editorial group of five and enthusiasm jumping off its eight pages. (<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read issue #1<\/a>) Sections included Book Review, Real Life, Diet, and a Dear Doctor column with replies from Dr Robina Creaser, and occasionally, other relevant specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newsletter was rich with news on the Hepatitis C Council SA (HCCSA) and its support group activities, as well as information on transmission, diet, treatments, legal rights and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn12\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/12p3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The first Hepatitis C Awareness Day in South Australia &#8211; Issue 12, August 2000<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Deborah joined the Council in 1997 and hadn\u2019t looked back since. By mid-1999 she was editor of the Community News. \u201cDoug Mellors [the writer behind <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/issue14\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Doug\u2019s Desk<\/em><\/a>] taught me how to look up information. I\u2019d go to the Barr Smith library and spend hours there reading up on the latest research. I was so proud of my membership card. I\u2019d be there, putting my head down, reading as much as I could, hoping people would think I\u2019m a student,\u201d she said, laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was editor from issues <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn09\">9<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn20\">20<\/a>. I learnt all my computer skills from working at the Council, especially on the newsletter \u2013 touch-typing and layout with Publisher. It was very much a community learning together.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn17\/16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More Deborah\u2019s story #16<\/a>.) Editorial group members working alongside Deborah included Doug Mellors, Sharon Drage, and Fred Robertson, with proofreading support from acting manager Leslie Whiteman. Subsequent issues listed HCCSA Coordinator, Kerry Paterson, as proofreader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Perhaps the most striking difference between the very early Community News and now, is the lively community engagement&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Deborah remembered key events reported in the magazine. One such highlight was the first Hepatitis C Awareness Day in SA. <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn12\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Issue 12<\/a> (Autumn 2000) reported on the Awareness Day launch by the Minister for Disability Services, Robert Lawson. Adelaide Mayor, Jane Lomax-Smith, facilitated a lived experience forum and Equal Opportunity Commissioner, Linda Mathews, launched a pamphlet jointly produced by HCCSA and the Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also a pre-Awareness-Day education session run by HCCSA, the Drug and Alcohol Services Council, Marion Youth Centre and COPE; and HCCSA launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20000829115121\/http:\/www.hepccouncilsa.asn.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brand new website<\/a> on that first Awareness Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkably, we learn from <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn44\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issue 44 (July 2009)<\/a>, that Dr. Jane Lomax-Smith again launched the Council\u2019s hepatitis C awareness campaign, by then part of the World Hepatitis Day campaign. This time she was doing it as Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, on behalf of Health Minister, John Hill. And coincidentally, HCCSA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090627090634\/http:\/www.hepccouncilsa.asn.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revamped website<\/a> was also launched that day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most striking difference between the very early Community News and now, is the lively community engagement: questions to the doctor, <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn03\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">angry letters<\/a>, thank you letters, personal stories and so on. as described in <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/hepccsa\/docs\/hccn21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issue 21<\/a> \u2013 recognise anyone?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Community News has become more professional in presentation and content, as befits the flagship publication of a peak service organisation,&#8221; said Fred. \u201cWe lose some spontaneity in the process, but we also gain a lot: more credibility, access to decision-makers, more funding and greater reach.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no formal archive recording the history of Hepatitis C Council SA \u2013 now Hepatitis SA \u2013 but the Community News does a pretty good job filling that gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its 100 issues to date chart the organisation\u2019s growth from a small group of committed individuals with varying skill levels, to a peak organisation with highly skilled staff providing on-going support and services, reaching more people and having input into state-level decision-making that affects the hepatitis sector and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-green-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/hcnstack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read all 100 issues<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before social media and online chat, there were newsletters.
