Pollution data spanning 2014\u20132020 was obtained from the US&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/a>, encompassing pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>), sulphur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>) and ozone (O\u2083).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon_monoxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbon monoxide<\/a> is usually produced by burning fossil fuels, and is extremely toxic when inhaled. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nitrogen_dioxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nitrogen dioxide<\/a>, often produced by burning natural gas, causes a range of respiratory diseases and can also be lethal if inhaled at higher levels. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sulfur_dioxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sulphur dioxide<\/a>, also created through burning fossil fuels and through volcanic activity, is poisonous in high amounts. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ozone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ozone<\/a>, while vital in the upper atmosphere for the UV-deflecting ozone layer, is extremely poisonous to humans at sea level, attacking the respiratory, cardiovascular, central nervous and reproductive systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/PM_and_a_human_hair_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/PM_and_a_human_hair_web.jpg 975w, https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/PM_and_a_human_hair_web-600x419.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/PM_and_a_human_hair_web-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/PM_and_a_human_hair_web-768x536.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By Environmental Protection Agency &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics<\/a>, Public Domain, <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=94168146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=94168146<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study also looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Particulates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particulate matter<\/a>, which are microscopic objects floating in the air and which, when inhaled, can cause damage to the lungs and other internal organs. Particulate matter is often referred to by its size, such as PM10 (particles with a diameter of 10 micrometres or less, which can damage the lungs and heart) or PM2.5 (particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres (0.0025 mm) or smaller, often found in smoke).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A series of analyses were done to evaluate the singular and combined impacts of pollutants on viral hepatitis cases across different demographics, age groups, and environmental conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among different groups, PM2.5 emerged as the most significant risk factor, notably impacting patients with hepatitis C and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hepatitis-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hepatitis E<\/a>, as well as being particularly damaging for people aged from 35 to 64. Carbon monoxide predominantly affected those living with <a href=\"https:\/\/hepsa.asn.au\/about-hepatitis\/hepatitis-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hepatitis A<\/a>.
