{"id":3848,"date":"2024-05-27T10:23:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T00:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/?p=3848"},"modified":"2024-06-04T22:43:07","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T13:13:07","slug":"national-reconciliation-week-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2024\/05\/national-reconciliation-week-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"National Reconciliation Week 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-indigenous Australians took a battering in 2023 when the <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2023\/10\/hepatitis-sa-supports-the-voice-to-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referendum <\/a>on constitutional recognition of our country&#8217;s first people was defeated following a campaign marred by racism, disinformation and ignorance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/oct\/15\/indigenous-communities-overwhelmingly-voted-yes-to-australias-voice-to-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even though it was supported by an overwhelming proportion of indigenous Australians<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reconciliation.org.au\/our-work\/national-reconciliation-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Reconciliation Week<\/a> is an attempt to help bridge the divide between both communities, and to help heal some of the damage done in both the past and present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first National Reconciliation Week since the referendum, the message from First Nations people is <strong>Now More Than Ever<\/strong> \u2013 a reminder to all of us that no matter what setbacks we face, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NowMoreThanEver?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NowMoreThanEver<\/a> the work continues. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect. Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples <em><strong>for the benefit of all Australians<\/strong><\/em>. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Australia\u2019s colonial history is characterised by devastating land dispossession, violence, and racism. Over the last half-century, however, many significant steps towards reconciliation have been taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful change, future gains are likely to take just as much, if not more, effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a just, equitable and reconciled Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children will have the same life chances and choices as non-Indigenous children, and the length and quality of a person\u2019s life will not be determined by their racial background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirby.unsw.edu.au\/research\/reports\/Blood-borne-viral-and-sexually-transmissible-infections-in-Aboriginal-and-Torres-Strait-Islander-peoples-Annual-surveillance-report-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viral hepatitis is an important case in point<\/a>.
