That said, it is disappointing to note that hepatitis B is again given a back seat with less than half the total funding for hepatitis C initiatives, despite the fact that in Australia, there are more people living with chronic hepatitis B than there are with hepatitis C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continuation and expansion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/collections\/national-strategies-for-bloodborne-viruses-and-sexually-transmissible-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Strategies for Bloodborne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections<\/a> is funded over the next two years to the tune of $126.5 million, specifically to extend and expand activities to support the prevention, testing and treatment of blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections, including support for First Nations communicable disease services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure promote vaccination uptake in First Nations communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$28.6 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to continue support and expand syphilis and sexually transmissible infections testing in First Nations communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$17.5 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to support continued delivery of the national blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections strategies, including to implement culturally safe sexual health services for First Nations peoples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$16.5 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to continue and expand communicable disease molecular point of care testing for First Nations, rural and remote communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$9.9 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to continue and expand the national hepatitis C point of care testing program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$7.9 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to continue funding peak bodies to implement the national blood-borne viruses and sexually transmission infections strategies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$7.8 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to develop and pilot hepatitis B projects to reduce transmission of hepatitis B in Australia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$6.0 million over two years from 2024\u201325 to continue support for hepatitis C projects to reduce transmission of hepatitis C in Australia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government has also announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepatitisaustralia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hepatitis Australia<\/a> will receive funding for its work leading the national effort to eliminate hepatitis B and hepatitis C as public health threats by 2030, which will help deliver the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepatitisaustralia.au\/r?u=X6WdnDpDKRhaZYLu7a1qAThKM54B2eXbMTs4o5rvlfpmPe3u2MJpmFs7QFdPdaTVWcwa9_1kC06-d-I5OJ2k-SouDLmOLk8DR2eNIlSBfAPglBxVJq0JQKlQ0Ub6Mh9ILNlbPYAxopgdZrzsJbBT8Q&amp;e=a74e4eda998c9843b7126e8cab6f9b15&amp;utm_source=hepatitisaustralia&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=media_statement_federal_budget&amp;n=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fourth National Hepatitis B Strategy 2023-2030&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a \/>\n\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\t\t<\/button><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Budget also provides a fairly minimal annual sum of $100,000 for payouts to people who were infected with hepatitis C through compromised blood products before universal testing was introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted earlier, hepatitis C continues to receive more attention than hepatitis B: indeed, the total hepatitis C allocation ($15.9 million) is more than double the allocation for hepatitis B ($7.8 million). Funding for hepatitis C initiatives include $9.9 million for continuation and expansion of testing programs, as well as $6 million for initiatives to reduce transmission. There is no funding for hepatitis B testing or screening, only $7.8 million for projects to reduce transmission. It\u2019s also part of a Budget that seems to be aiming for a conservative, \u201cresponsible\u201d look, which means a large surplus of unspent money when many other areas of health (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralhealth.org.au\/media-release\/budget-2024-25-missed-opportunity-rural-health-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the gap between metro and rural care<\/a>) as well as numerous other areas of public spending (education, Newstart and other allowances, aged care, <a href=\"https:\/\/womensagenda.com.au\/latest\/limited-support-for-crisis-of-domestic-and-family-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">domestic violence<\/a>, environmental protection and restoration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.au\/the-federal-budget-what-it-means-for-refugees-and-people-seeking-humanitarian-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refugee support<\/a>) are crying out for more funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simultaneously, the government is also committed to spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crikey.com.au\/2023\/03\/14\/aukus-submarine-deal-australia-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than a third of a trillion dollars<\/a> over the medium term on nuclear submarines that commentators believe are of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2021\/oct\/05\/will-all-submarines-even-nuclear-ones-be-obsolete-and-visible-by-2040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unproven utility<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/may\/13\/australia-aukus-deal-submarines-critics-nuclear-waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questionable safety<\/a>. For more context, the government is granting almost four times as much as it is spending on viral hepatitis to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/technology\/labor-s-bold-1b-bet-on-aussie-quantum-start-up-20240429-p5fnb7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a foreign company for a quantum computer that will not even be owned by Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is, in the end, a cautious Budget in an age that needs bravery to tackle big problems, and the long-term health burden of viral hepatitis
