However, Australia&#8217;s hepatitis community has a right to view this commitment with some skepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">The current federal government has an unfortunate track record for making impressive funding announcements, and then, months later, making them again as though they were new. Sometimes this is repeated several times\u2013the recent manufacturing funding announcements which garnered wide positive media coverage have now been announced multiple times, without the money yet being spent. Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themonthly.com.au\/today\/nick-feik\/2020\/01\/2020\/1601527323\/don-t-believe-hype\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this summary<\/a> from <em>The Monthly<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themonthly.com.au\/author\/nick-feik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Feik<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>A plan for manufacturing is a great idea, for sure. It\u2019s so great, in fact, that this is the fifth time in 15 months that he or Industry Minister Karen Andrews has announced one. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/may\/20\/coalition-eyes-australian-economic-sovereignty-with-boost-to-manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/morrison-signals-more-help-for-australian-manufacturing-20200609-p550wr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June<\/a>&nbsp;this year, and on two occasions last year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/federal-election-2019\/morrison-pledges-australian-made-campaign-20190505-p51ka8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May 2019<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.minister.industry.gov.au\/ministers\/karenandrews\/media-releases\/fund-modernise-manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sept 2019<\/a>), the Morrison government announced almost identical strategies. Last year\u2019s announcement, for example, promised to create \u201c1.25 million new jobs over the next five years\u201d by co-funding investments in new technologies. You\u2019d be right to wonder what happened to that strategy. And the others. This is particularly concerning given the falling hepatitis testing rates since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d said Ms Fowlie. \u201cPathology testing data shows that there has been a decline in tests for non-COVID conditions, and in the case of hepatitis we understand that the numbers have not yet recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecent data from the Viral Hepatitis Mapping Project shows that Australia is no longer on track to meet the nationally agreed targets outlined in the National Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Strategies 2018-2022.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe urge the Australian Government to release the implementation funding under the National Blood Borne Virus and Sexually Transmissible Infections Strategies.
