(Read Parts <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2017\/09\/eating-low-sodium-part-one-the-no-added-salt-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/2017\/12\/eating-low-sodium-part-two-tracking-your-daily-sodium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Two<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong><em>This article contains general advice about lowering your sodium \u2013 you should check with your health care team about making sure your other nutritional needs are met especially if you need a high protein, high energy diet.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping to a low sodium diet presents a different set of challenges when you don&#8217;t cook but despite the difficulties, there are benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits and costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Costs<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>May allow those who can\u2019t follow the No Added Salt Diet to reduce their sodium intake and avoid or reduce ascites<\/td><td>Not as healthy or nutritious as the No Added Salt Diet<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Able to continue eating a diet that is similar to what you are used to<\/td><td>Most people will still need to make some changes to what they are eating<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>More expensive than cooking from scratch<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Involves tracking so has the same costs &amp; benefits we covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/blog\/eating-low-sodium-part-two-tracking-your-daily-sodium\/\">previous post<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t prepare your own meals but want to reduce your sodium you will need to be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/healthyweightweek.com.au\/understanding-food-labels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read nutrition labels<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>look up estimates of sodium content for foods without labels (try <a href=\"http:\/\/calorie king.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CalorieKing<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to be certain that you are staying within the recommended daily limit you will also need to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/eating-low-sodium-part-one-the-no-added-salt-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">track the sodium<\/a> you\u2019ve consumed for the day. (See our previous posts on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/eating-low-sodium-part-one-the-no-added-salt-diet\/\"><em>No Added Salt Diet<\/em><\/a>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/eating-low-sodium-part-two-tracking-your-daily-sodium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tracking your daily sodium<\/a><\/em>To see other low-salt related posts click on the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/hepatitissa.asn.au\/communitynews\/tag\/low-sodium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low sodium\u2019 tag<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also probably need to change some of the foods that you eat. The examples below show how high in sodium most takeaway and pre-prepared foods are (remember, we are aiming for a maximum of 2,000mg per day):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Big Mac &#8211; 933mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domino\u2019s Mega Meat Lovers Pizza (3 slices) &#8211; 1413mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Takeaway Pad Thai &#8211; 1232mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subway Italian BMT 6\u201d &#8211; 1010mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meat Pie &#8211; 875mg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, small changes can make a real difference to how much sodium you\u2019re eating over the day. Below are some strategies for you to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eat fresher, less processed foods for breakfast and lunch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating lower sodium foods for your breakfast, lunch and snacks can give you more leeway when choosing foods for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <em>Throughout this article you will see notes from Hepatitis SA staff and friends on foods we&#8217;ve reviewed. These are our personal opinions and the list isn&#8217;t comprehensive. There there are likely other brands that are just as good that we haven\u2019t tried.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breakfast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Low salt cereals &#8211; <em>Penni recommends the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jordanscereals.com\/en-au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jordan\u2019s Cereals<\/a> brand. They&#8217;re no added salt and she&nbsp;says they&#8217;re delicious.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>oats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>banana or other fresh or canned fruits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lower salt breads (Burgen is lower sodium) with no salt nut butters, no salt butter, jam or honey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>baked beans (reduced salt)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>eggs (you can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/arielknutson\/easy-ways-to-cooks-eggs-in-a-microwave?utm_term=.elmr19RPo#.cjqQEJma2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microwave<\/a> them)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>avocado toast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tinned mushrooms on toast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>yoghurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these foods are also great for lunch (or even a simple dinner) or a snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--default)\"><strong>Lunch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wraps or sandwiches with lower salt fillings. They are both lower in sodium and also provide more protein and vegetables in their meals than many other brands. Nutrition info is on their websites.&nbsp;<em><span style=\"color: #008B8B;\">I really like the Supernature ones, they&#8217;re some of the best frozen meals I&#8217;ve tried.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youfoodz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouFoodz<\/a> have fresh prepared meals that you can have delivered or buy at some shops (mostly Drakes and Foodland). Nutrition info is on their website.<em>&nbsp;Fred has tried a few and really enjoyed them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liteneasy.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LitenEasy<\/a> also deliver meals. They have nutrition information for all of their dinners (but not all of their other meals) on their website. <em><span style=\"color: #008B8B;\">Di likes the dinners aside from the pastas. She suggests varying them with other meals because she doesn\u2019t find them as nutritious as homemade.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be eligible for <a href=\"http:\/\/mealsonwheelssa.org.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meals on Wheels<\/a>&nbsp;. Speak to them about your sodium requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re prepared to do some cooking then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hellofresh.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hello Fresh<\/a> provides ingredients and instructions for you to prepare meals at home. Nutrition information is on their website but you will need to watch out for their spice\/flavouring sachets as they don\u2019t tell you what\u2019s in them and it\u2019s probably high in sodium.&nbsp;<em><span style=\"color: #008B8B;\">Lisa likes this option, especially as her son prepared dinner for the whole family for the first time just by following the recipe card!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/marleyspoon.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MarleySpoon<\/a> are a similar company but they don\u2019t provide any sodium information on their meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Choose lower sodium takeaways<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sodium levels can really vary from product to product even within the same takeaway chain. Here are some alternatives to the high sodium examples given earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Instead of:<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Have:<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>MacDonald\u2019s Big Mac &#8211; 933mg<\/td><td>MacDonald\u2019s Fillet-o-Fish &#8211; 613mg<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Domino\u2019s Mega Meat Lovers Pizza (3 slices) &#8211; 1413mg<\/td><td>Domino\u2019s Garden Vege Pizza (3 slices) &#8211; 756mg<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Takeaway Pad Thai &#8211; 1232mg<\/td><td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supernaturefoods.com.au\/superfoods-recipe-steam-chicken-pad-thai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supernature Frozen Chicken Pad Thai with Rice Noodles<\/a> &#8211; 990mg<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Subway Italian BMT 6\u201d &#8211; 1010mg<\/td><td>Subway Oven roasted chicken 6\u201d &#8211; 477mg<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Meat Pie &#8211; 875 mg<i><br><\/i><\/td><td>Frozen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woolworths.com.au\/shop\/productdetails\/372519\/sargents-premium-pies-angus-beef-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sargents Aussie Angus Beef Family Pie<\/a> (1\/4 of pie) &#8211; 530mg<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most companies make their nutrition information available online and they should also have the printouts available for you to look at in-store if it isn\u2019t a part of their menu. The Healthy Food Guide provides more tips for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthyfoodguide.com.au\/articles\/2010\/december\/best-and-worst-takeaway#h2-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">choosing healthier takeaway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\"><strong>Bulk out your meals with filling and nutritious low sodium foods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plain rice pouches from SunRice and Tilda are low in sodium. Here are a few ideas to get you started &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frozen salmon with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geniuskitchen.com\/recipe\/microwave-mashed-potatoes-148484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mash made in the microwave<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stirfry &#8211;&nbsp; combine a supermarket stirfy veg pack, a pack of beef strips, chicken strips or tofu and a pouch of rice. Try one of the Kikkoman brand marinades for a soy sauce taste with a fraction of the salt (you will still need to measure it).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy one baking pan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekitchn.com\/easy-sheet-pan-chicken-dinner-recipes-257671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roast chicken dinners<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com.au\/recipe\/12731\/baked-potato-in-the-microwave.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microwaved<\/a> or oven baked potato with tuna or beans with a cheesy topping (mozzarella is a lower sodium option).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #008B8B;\"><em>Joy and her grandson recommend<\/em><\/span> Safcol Garlic &amp; Chilli flavoured tuna with pasta &amp; frozen peas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frozen ravioli. <span style=\"color: #008B8B;\"><em>Joy recommends the South Australian brand AR Premium Foods Beef Ravioli with a lower sodium pasta sauce.<\/em><\/span> Not all pasta sauces are equal. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/healthcare\/massive-variation-in-salt-levels-found-in-cooking-sauces-new-study-reveals-20170821-gy0u2n.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent study<\/a> found one Barilla variety to have <em>90 times<\/em> more sodium than other brands, so be sure to check before you buy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope this series of posts has provided you with some ideas for managing your salt intake no matter what your level of skill or interest in cooking is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel that you aren\u2019t up to tackling this by yourself, get some help. A registered dietician should be able to help you create a meal plan that is satisfying and enjoyable for you while meeting your salt intake and other nutrition needs. Remember, any eating plan is a good one only if you actually follow it!
