If you\u00a0haven\u2019t achieved\u00a0some\u00a0great new\u00a0thing\u00a0while in isolation, there is something wrong with you.\u00a0At least\u00a0that’s what some social media\u00a0influencers\u00a0would have\u00a0us\u00a0believe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motivational posts urg<\/span>ing<\/span> you to learn a new language<\/span>,<\/span> start a new <\/span>business<\/span> or<\/span> acquire new knowledge<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>label<\/span> you <\/span>as<\/span> lacking in discipline<\/span> <\/span>if you achieved none of those <\/span>grand goals<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truth is, i<\/span>f you are anything like me<\/span>,<\/span> you<\/span>\u2019d<\/span> have been struggling to bother to even get dressed each day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isolation <\/span>at home <\/span>has not been free time in any normal sense<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>T<\/span>here is a deadly global pandemic and it is ok not to be ok with this. People are <\/span>dealing <\/span>with job loss<\/span>es<\/span>, reduced income<\/span>s<\/span> and<\/span> fear<\/span>s<\/span> about <\/span>the <\/span>illness for self or loved ones.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>are among the lucky ones to retain our jobs, we <\/span>may find difficult<\/span>y<\/span> focusing<\/span>,<\/span> with additional demands at home such as <\/span>a houseful of children to keep occupied. <\/span>These are<\/span> strange and uncertain time<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also time<\/span> for <\/span>self<\/span><\/b>–<\/span><\/b>compassion<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kindness to oneself is <\/span>not<\/span> practi<\/span>s<\/span>ed enough<\/span>,<\/span> in my opinion. We are our own worst critic; cruel and unforgiving to ourselves. W<\/span>e often fail to understand<\/span> that we <\/span>need <\/span>to<\/span> put ourselves first, particularly during this time of uncertainty<\/span>,<\/span> so that we are there for others who need us.<\/span> <\/span>The oft-cited example to support the rational<\/span>e<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> self-care is oxygen mask<\/span>s<\/span> on airplane<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

T<\/span>he flight attendant instructs you to \u201c<\/span>put your oxygen mask<\/span><\/b>\u202fon first,\u201d\u202f<\/span>before helping others<\/span><\/b>. Why is <\/span>this an<\/span> important rule for ensuring survival? <\/span>Because if you run out of\u202f<\/span>oxygen<\/span><\/b>\u202fyourself, you can’t\u202f<\/span>help<\/span><\/b>\u202fanyone else with\u202f<\/span>their oxygen mask<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are in a<\/span> challenging<\/span> situation right <\/span>now<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
